You want me to exfoliate my lips? Why?!

That was my first thought when I heard about adding this step into my beauty regime, but as time went on, I came to find out just how valuable lip exfoliation can be. If you’re like me, you often find yourself frustrated with dry lips. Turns out exfoliation works to remove excess dry, dead skin from our lips, revealing the soft, even layer of skin that’s been hiding underneath. So lip exfoliation should always be a part of our routine, and yet it’s so often overlooked or even completely forgotten!

Usually once a week is sufficient. Colder months may call for more. But remember, not all of our lips are the same, so it’s best to pay attention to your lips and how they are feeling to determine how often to exfoliate.

Here are a few inexpensive and natural ways to exfoliate your lips simply using products you can find around the house:

Toothbrush – A toothbrush is something that is already part of our everyday regimen. So why not kill two birds with one stone? After brushing your teeth, rinse off the toothbrush well. Then saturate your lips with lots of water and begin to brush. Remember to be gentle but effective.

Wash Cloth – for those of us who use a wash cloth when bathing, here’s the perfect time to exfoliate. Using your wash cloth, massage your lips in a continuous circular motion. You’ll leave the shower not only feeling clean, but also with the softest lips. As always, remember to replace your cloth with a freshly laundered one on a regular basis!

Sugar Scrub – Take sugar (preferably raw brown sugar) and mix it with extra virgin olive oil. If you don’t have EVOO, feel free to replace it with an oil you may have in your kitchen (for example, sweet almond oil or coconut oil). Once the mixture is made, simply use your finger to gently rub the scrub onto your lips for about 20 seconds. Then rinse off the scrub using cool to warm water. (Hint* Add honey to the scrub for added moisture). Check out the lip tips page on our website for a DIY lip scrub video!

Baking Soda – Reach into the back of your refrigerator and pull out the baking soda. Mix a spoonful with water, creating a paste. Massage the paste into your lips (using either your fingers or a wash cloth). Once massaged in, let it sit for a few second and rinse.

With each of these exfoliating methods, don’t forget to finish with a moisturizing lip balm for lasting results.

We all want attractive, soft, smooth, healthy looking lips. So let’s give them the care they deserve and start treating them like they’re our only pair!
